TDM 006

⏵ arrival ⏴

Arrival is absolutely not normal this month. Instead of a hospital bed, you wake in a tunnel with a large group of other people. These are the residents. A woman’s voice in an earpiece hurriedly clues you in with an apology.

I apologize; I had not planned to introduce you this way, but we are low on time. Please proceed down the hallway.

An image of a shattered pearl pops up on your personal HUD and rotates.

I am Aurora. You are joining many others on Etraya in order to save your world from destruction by completing missions. Your current mission is to find the pieces of this object that have become scattered in the library ahead of you.

For everyone else, coming in is much the same. The instruction goes out to head to designated areas immediately, where companion bots will escort the residents of Etraya down into the depths, the area beneath where much the same is explained.

⏵ disrobing ⏴

The tunnel eventually opens directly into the foreroom of an expansive library, painted in marvelous hues and patterns with skylights far above. There are wizards milling about, bearded and holding tomes, quietly chatting amongst themselves.

The reception area of the library has tall ceilings with equally tall doors Before you get too caught up in the scenery, a voice directs you forward. A gentleman, hunched and bespeckled craws out.

"Make a line! Make a line, everyone! You cannot enter the library dressed as you are... Come forward and give me your name."

The receptionist asks your given name and then hands over a box from underneath his counter. You can give him any name you want, he doesn’t seem to mind. It is tied with a tagged ribbon- labeling it accordingly. “The _____ robe of _______.”

(First Letter of Given Name) (Last Letter of Given Name)
A Controlling N Helpful A Melodies N Light
B Glimmering O Floating B Discretion O Mind-Reading
C Wet P Handsome C Growth P Climbing
D Gruesome Q Gullible D Grasping Q Jumping
E Observant R Ratty E Flying R Hurting
F Powerful S Adhesive F Reading S Guiding
G Psychedelic T Sweltering G Dancing T Bug-Speaking
H Swift U Cheerful H Shouting U Exploding
I Voracious V Anxious I Extracting V Complaining
J Soft W Likeable J Punishing W Dividing
K Keen X Ruthless K Creeping X Slapping
L Fabulous Y Dramatic L Walking Y Charming
M Fair Z Demonic M Listening Z Combustion

As you read what the contents of the box may be, they form inside- Looking and behaving as your character expects them to. After all, magic is all in the wielder’s mind.

Don your robes and enter the library.

⏵ unfamiliar familiars ⏴

For those without a familiar (like one hatched from an egg not too long ago) you may borrow one from the library counter. They all have strengths and weaknesses, but they will all assist in the very important mission. As you roam the library, they will make little indications that you are closer or further from finding a piece of the pearl.

Image Image Image
Pro • Hardworking
• Gives correct directions 75% of time
• Won’t run away from you
• Very affectionate
• Gives correct directions only when paired with another rat, toad, or personal pet.
• Gives correct directions 90% of the time
Con • Must feed bookworms • Will run away if too close to a cat • Does not care for you
• Sleepy
• Will run ahead
• Gets distracted by rats

⏵ the task at hand ⏴

With robes donned and creature in hand, you must now complete your mission. Find the pieces of the shattered pearl. As you enter the library, you may notice that it’s all very dim. There’s oil lamps around the place that may be moved with you to assist in your journey if your robes do not already emit light.

Break off and search the library. There is a directory at the front to point guests to all the different sections.

Wings of the Library
A General Works B Music
C Philosophy, Religion D Fine Arts
E History, Auxiliary Sciences F Language and Literature
G Magic, General H Science
J Geography, Anthopology K Medicine
M Agriculture N Hobbies, Recreation
P Social Science Q Military
R Political Science S Practical Arts
T Law W People
X Education Y Spiders

Each section looks enough like the last, though the books within have immense power. Pick up the wrong book, and you might conjure a dragon or a historical figure! You must persist and avoid making too much noise or breaking too many things.

Or else the Librarian, a tall mass of knotted fabric will confiscate your robe and usher you back outside. Your name will be struck from the list, and you must pick a new one to re-enter the library to continue the search.

You can try to fight back against him- he may be set alight with the lamp. But should you be starting fires in here?

⏵ NOTES ⏴

Any thread with 15 comments between you and another may be submitted to find a piece of the pearl. There are 20 pieces altogether, and we will determine if the mission was successful by March 28th. A post will go live on the OOC comm for this!

This mission occurs out of time, similar to how the spaceship had. Meaning, those currently in game can experience these events any time between now, and March 14th.

Please direct all questions to our mod queries comment!

[When she responds, he freezes. That can't be possible, unless there is some kind of temporal fluctuation going on. Echo could be screwing around with both time and space. It seems like that's possible.

He doesn't have an answer, though, and it's kind of terrifying.

Accelerator doesn't fully let go, just pulls back enough to look her in the eye, shifting his grip to her shoulders.]

I don't know. What's the last thing you remember?

[ It's clear that Accelerator has been severely underrepresenting his power. His confidence can only mean that he's seen it firsthand, and John is willing to bet he was directly involved in the fight himself. So even though Accelerator things Harold is terrifying, John thinks he's not being particularly forthcoming (or realistic) about his own capabilities. It's moments like these that make John appreciative that everyone is cooperating; even at his best he's so severely outmatched. His mood had improved since Accelerator came along but it sours at that thought. ]

Do you know if anyone has talked with Echo before? Or tried?

John almost says "no shit" but holds back at the last moment. Of course his robe is glowing. It's not like he has any choice in the matter. And now it's getting him into random conversations that he has no desire to be apart of. He'd rather just search for whatever shard they're looking for in peace, spared from being a spectacle.

"And yours isn't."

"At least you aren't covered in goop." Will Rosie ever stop telling that story to new arrivals? Probably not. It was pretty memorable. For all the ways she could have woken up, on a space station and in a sickly, sticky fluid wasn't one of them. They'd hosed her off quick enough, at least, and she'd met some nice people so- It wasn't all bad. "I can't speak to regular arrivals, since mine wasn't, but they seem to like to throw newcomers for a loop now and again."

Exhibit A: magic library and funny-powered robes. As she talks though, the blonde is taking off her own robe and finding something to tie it up to. Then, something else that's equally as tall to tie the other sleeve on. After a moment or so, she's got a makeshift 'changing screen' for Rose to use. "I'll keep watch, too," she offers. "Not that anyone here would likely try anything funny." Honestly? The opposite, she's sure.

Almost everyone here she knows is far too kind for their own good. (No, she doesn't see the flaw in that line of thinking.)

It might be useful to test out. See how helpful that could be.

[Admittedly, it could be a bit dangerous, too. But so is using a magic item you don't know the limits of.]

“No, it is not.”

Clef’s wardrobe, though intricate and immaculate for one in his position, had no other purpose than to cover his own nakedness. It was strange for the taller man to point that out, as if it was expected to do more than what it's designed for.

He figured the glowing nature of the other’s clothing was the result of magic, but from where, or better yet, who and why? It was then his eyes narrowed as he focused his attention at the desk where the receptionist stood - the very one whose words were ignored due to his lack of trust.

“It appears I was right to doubt the gentleman’s motives.”

Right on the nose there. And technically not at all. I mess with gravity. Climb up walls, jump real high, mimic superstrength by making other things lighter, that kinda thing.

One of the lab guys that made me called me more spider than boy, so when I decided to do the whole superhero thing a couple years later that's what I went with. Sounded better than Gravity-Boy, anyways.

[That and it was his first real memory, not knowledge implanted into his brain. It stuck with him.]

Heck of a lot easier to theme a costume after too.

[It's not much of a connection, but it's something. And that's the important part. There are probably countless other people in similar positions, she just hasn't put in much of an effort to poll everyone about where they'd come from.]

In that case, it's not worth you remembering its name.

[If it had one. It probably had one, but there's no way for her to know for sure- and honestly, it doesn't matter all that much to her. If his experience there was as unpleasant as she's assuming based on what little he's admitted so far, it might even be better to just let it remain a mystery.]

I'm glad you're not there anymore. [She's not particularly glad that he's here instead of being at home, or someplace else entirely, but it is what it is. Outside of a couple of strange missions, this place has been like a dream she doesn't want to wake up from.]

Do you want to wake up? [Do you want to go home? is what she'd really like to ask, but that doesn't seem like the sort of question to ask someone within roughly five minutes of meeting them. There are more important things to think about, anyway.]

Maybe you should consider doing something about that instead of playing wizard scavenger hunt. [She's making light of the reason they've all been gathered here, because she's found that being able to laugh about how bizarre things can get from time to time is helpful.]

Mostly diners. There are a couple of coffee shops, and a burger place too. The diner does all day breakfast, which is why it's my favorite.

Okay.

[ That sounds fair. He glances at the rat in his hand that still seems quite sad. ]

Hm. [ Loosening his hold, his familiar decides to book it immediately out of his hand. It takes a leap of faith down to the floor before sprinting down the aisle. ]

So -- [ As fast as he needs to ... he takes a step forward just as the little frightened speck that is the rat tries to turn the corner to another aisle.

He is standing over the rat before scooping it quickly back up in his hands. And turning to run back to his companion.

Henry can actually feel the air push back his bangs from how fast he moved. The whole process took a few seconds but he is back standing in front of him, blinking. ]

... I dunno. It is just ... what does your robe do? [ Moving quick is fine, he supposes, but he isn't sure how useful it is. That is what he tries to convey. ]

The librarians are probably used to it. These books do all kinds of strange things.

[ Yuri will decidedly not be disclosing the surprises his first few books greeted him with, but it's safe to surmise that it's all old hat to the people who work with them. ]

So don't worry about it, alright?

[ Yuri's no stranger to low light, but fire appearing without any form of conjuring ring comes as a surprise to him. Curious. He files that little tidbit away for later review. ]

Well now I'm curious, what were you going to call me?

Izuku keeps his usually emotional voice as level and measured as he can. He's aiming for soothing here. He counts the symptoms in his head—shortness of breath, dilated pupils, and all the hallmarks of panic are very clear to him.

"It's okay, we can figure that out together. Let's sit—just here, against the wall. It's quieter than in the library. They're, uh, conducting a research project right now..."

Izuku guesses the last thing Peter needs is a randomly summoned elephant charging at him or a crowd of people staring at him. Izuku hates being stared at by a group of strangers himself.

"You can call me Deku. I'm not in costume right now, but I'm a Hero in training. Can you tell me your name? And how old are you? Are you from America?" He can hardly ask him the year to gauge his cognition, but he can ask him these.

Whether it was meant to be heard by others or not, the spoken words had definitely caught Clef’s undivided attention. It wasn't long before his eyes rested upon the one behind the voice, only to widen with the realization that a child was inside the tunnel - a literal child.

Cephiro was a land of will. The heart which believes was the greatest power. It was why Ascot grew in height and became a teen in a short amount of time, why Princess Emeraude maintained peace and prosperity to her people until…

This young girl was not from Cephiro. She’s likely from another world like Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. And like the Magic Knights, it’s possible she had endured hardships no other in her age range should experience first hand. If her statement held any truth, she was brought here before to complete missions in an attempt to save her world. Apparently she had returned… but why?

He needed to know what’s truly going on, that this wasn’t some sick and horrible joke. He’d already blamed himself for the pain, sadness, and sorrow the Magic Knights felt concerning the former Pillar. He refused to allow the same fate to happen to anyone else and especially if it could be prevented.

Using the staff as leverage, Clef made his way towards the girl with each careful step. Despite his labored breathing, despite the fatigue shown in his eyes, despite the strain on his overworked body… his will was stronger. He will not let his weakened state interfere, not now…

[Maybe he doesn't fully trust himself with the floating thing. A small twitch of smile takes his expression as he reaches up to shake Jayce's hand. At least that's one thing he's gotten used to!]

[ Gorgug should be paying more attention to the way this guy has difficulty talking, huh. But everything about Henry is so mesmerising and okay, anyway... and it's even gotten Gorgug talking more than usual, that he doesn't notice any long pauses or odd staring. It's normal, right?

And they've got a giant nut to consider. A giant nut that isn't a nut at all, and actually, its colour and shape makes Gorgug almost want to drop it out of disgust. Good thing he doesn't, even though he's still looking at it...uncomfortably... ]

...that's it? Is this it? [ Continuing to look at it isn't giving Gorgug a good answer, so he looks at Henry instead. ] Should we take it to the front desk...?

Okay-- sure. [ His voice brightens, figuring: ] I can learn about more rides. What people do for their vehicles elsewhere.

[ And isn't it cool to learn? That much interests Gorgug, even though he doesn't have a vested interest in models beyond their pros and cons, and the types of modifications that people make to their own personalised vehicles--

but that's just the tinkerer inside him.

But their walking and talking has finally found them in the centre circle of the rows of aisles, which, given the time it took for them to get into it, speaks to their lengths. The lighting is dim, but there are placards that catch off John's lantern.

Gorgug is looking around at the options, curious. ]

...should we pick an aisle at random? [ He looks down at his toad, continuing to sit in his hands. ] ...are the animals supposed to work now?

[ Hello? Toad? ]
tinflower: (pic#17255875)

[personal profile] tinflower 2025-01-16 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"They looked...worn? It's kinda hard to say," Gorgug admits. "A lot of them look the same, but a lot of the books I looked at were faded. But none of the titles stood out. I don't think they did."

And was age even a factor worth noticing? All of the books surely had worn spines in this library, and tomes all have a similar, single-colour design to them that makes most of them all look like they've been around for a few hundred years. Tomes just have that look, from Gorgug's perspective.

He looks at his toad, their mission in mind. ...and his toad just looks keen to sit where it is.

"...do you think we have to give them something to get them working? Like magical food, or... ... I don't know how magical animals work."

Maybe he's missing something. He doesn't hang around with witches.

yet she was genuinely intrigued by him, wondering what kind of world he came from where the thought of having a door was enough to make him worry. )

You're probably right, I just wonder if the pay off is worth it.
