![]() ⏵ the usual arrival ⏴ NOTES\WARNINGS: Horror elements, themes of addiction, supernatural changes, light mind control Arrival goes as anticipated. Characters awaken in the sterile white glow of artificial lights, the hum of soft machinery thrumming in the background like a mechanical lullaby. The hospital room is pristine - almost too pristine - sterile, but oddly calming. Every surface gleams in a way that feels calculated as if someone had specifically designed the space to be comforting. Yet, a faint whiff of antiseptic clings to the air, and the silence feels unnatural. The first face they see is Aurora's: her smile appears to be warm, but it doesn't quite reach her eyes. She might offer a quick explanation, or leave characters to figure it out for themselves depending on their approach. The door to the room swings open, revealing a hallway that stretches out ahead of them. They're free to explore their surroundings now, but something tells them this place is more than just a hospital. The lobby is a stark contrast to the sterile rooms above. It's warm, almost welcoming. Currently, an array of cookie trays are strewn about the area just inside the door that leads them to the outside world, decorated with frosting shaped into leaves, pumpkins, and the occasional snowman. They aren't perfect, but - the companion bots tried their best, they're still figuring out this whole cookie decorating thing. At least most of the cookies are normal cookie flavors this time. However, it doesn't feel as if this is what they should be eating. Something is telling them to go outside. To find something more filling. ![]() ⏵ the unusual arrival ⏴ Perhaps you skip all of that, somehow, slipping through the cracks of the system. You arrive outside of the normal purview, outside of the hospital walls. Perhaps you come to, standing in line for a food truck covered in slime. You could be anywhere, though. At the Diner, perhaps the apartments, or a random shop. Anywhere. It’s okay, though. This has happened before, and they are more prepared for it. No matter where you are, the helper bots will be ready with a quick and convenient remedy. A companion bot approaches you, bidding you to step into a clear tube. Should you do so, it will seal before power-washing you from head to toe in an efficient handful of seconds. And then it will release you, sopping wet but clean! Oh dear, are you catching a bit of a chill? …They will come up with a solution for that next time, I’m afraid. ![]() ⏵ lunchtime ⏴ As the swelter of summer begins to fade into the first hints of autumn, a small fleet of food trucks arrives in each part of Etraya. When you arrive at one they offer a stamp card with a little map of Etraya and the location of each truck’s loop. "Make sure you don’t lose it," the cashier warns in a friendly tone despite their vague and shadowy visage. Once you begin sampling their offerings, stopping becomes near-impossible. The food is delicious--or seems to be. However, each dish comes with a catch, and the more you eat, the more its effects intensify. To break this curse, one must sample all and fill their stamp cards.
![]() ⏵ nova city ⏴ Nova City, vast and sprawling in its corner of Etraya, remains mostly abandoned. Its towering buildings stand silently, watching over empty streets where only stray cats and the occasional bird roam. The dragon, Zhaera, perches protectively atop the tallest spire at the heart of this desolate city. She has been guarding her egg since her arrival, waiting for the young dragon within to mature enough it can survive in the outside world. As its incubation period draws near, her anxiety grows. A tremor spreads through Etraya, an instinctive call to those nearby. As the egg nears its hatching, strange forces awaken within Etraya itself, spreading too into Nova City. Shadowy creatures crawl out from the ground, surrounding the tower the dragon and her unborn child have taken shelter on. The air crackles with the energy coming from the egg itself, and the cats throughout the city seem unsettled. The sheer amount of magic the egg gives off is enough to attract anyone capable of sensing it. The dragon, normally composed and fierce, appears to be visibly distressed by the changes going on in the city below it. Her maw opens, sending flames to ward off the inky black tendrils intent on getting to her egg. But she may need some assistance keeping it safe. This TDM covers September and October. lobby
Once he realizes that he's not alone in the lobby and takes notice of the dark skinned woman with the pointy ears, he freezes in his unrepentant munching, much like a child who'd just been caught stealing treats before dinner. Once he swallows his mouthful of cookie, he answers in an equally weary tone.
Surviving a siege of the undead will do that to someone, even after a full night's rest.]
They're not too bad. I've never had cookies like this before but they're tasty enough, I think.
no subject
This is, quite clearly, not her world.
So what's it to be, then? The easier going, yes, natural enough when she's been juggling politics thrust on her for the high honour of surviving a situation everyone else had perished in. She can let whatever else gets brought in rise as it will over time. Right now, there are cookies.
Ellana's smile is genuine, small and ready on her lips as she nibbles a little more of the orange frosted creation. )
A friend of mine would agree that strange as these ones seem, they're still a help when all the other shite going on is weird.
( Sera, who would not have borne through the explanation in that sterile, beeping chamber with the woman-who-was-not-a-spirit. )
How much of an explanation did you have from Aurora?
no subject
[At least, Nie Huaisang is being honest?]
Some of it I didn't fully understand but I think I got the general gist of why we're here. There are too many worlds and not enough resources to keep them going so Aurora is deciding which ones to keep and which ones to get rid of, right?
[Despite the frosting on his mouth, his expression turns more serious and grave at this point. His eyes grow cloud over and turn troubled at this point. He might not be anywhere near academically inclined enough to grasp all the scientific terminology that was used but he certainly understands the crux of the matter.]
And we were all brought here to undergo trials to see which worlds are worth saving and which ones are fine to discard? If I recall correctly.
[It's honestly all very concerning to him. Nie Huaisang's ever scored well on a test in his life and an outlier like himself is probably the worst pick for a sample of the people in his world. Still, here he is, regardless, and reaching for another cookie.]
no subject
The cookie ends up held between her teeth so she can use her hand to grab her staff, nodding towards open chairs nearby, not quite at the doors leading into the great outside unknowns.
She doesn't speak until they're settled one way or another, leaning her staff back against her shoulder to free her mouth of its burden. Swallowing the soggy cookie piece left in her mouth, she nods. What he's said is much as what she'd gathered. )
I don't know if Aurora is making those decisions, but she's observing, at minimum. It all feels strange, when there's no known set of traits for what makes a world, a whatever, worth saving.
( A spike of mild frustration: Fenhedis, she'd put her own into something of a stitched together form of complete only to have that collapse like a punctured ball, so here she is, meant to struggle to prove her world had a right to remain so they could continue struggling back home to make sure it wouldn't, in fact, be erased from existence far more thoroughly than Solas could begin to imagine?
Balefully, she glances at her cookie. Part of her would love to have a drink right about now. )
Is it ruthlessness? Compassion? The willingness we show to come together and solve problems? A resolve to be ahead of the rest, at all costs? What happens if one arrives here and all they want is the entirety of everything they've ever known to burn?
( Her shoulders lift in a small shrug as she settles back, taking another, larger bite of her cookie. Close to gone, now. Chew, swallow, consider the young-ish (probably?) man. At least here none of them were solving everyone's problems for each other, or labouring under pseudo-religious organizations.
That they knew about so far. )
It all seems a little contrived. Not that it's impossible, everything petty and ridiculous is possible, in my experience. So I suppose we're meant to decide how we want to look at things. ( A full glance, and a raised eyebrow aimed at him. ) What's your first inclination?
no subject
My first inclination is to cooperate with the trials, to take this matter seriously. That we are even here to begin with shows that whoever is doing the choosing, whether it's Aurora or someone she merely represents, has a very long reach and power to pluck us out of our homelands to bring us here.
[It's unusual for Nie Huaisang to display his intellect so openly but he's yet to see anyone that warrants playing dumb. And if anyone else from his world arrives in this place, well, he'll figure out how to deal with them later. When their whole world is at risk, including those under his own leadership back home, his personal grievances must be put aside or none of the work he's put into his plan or the sacrifices he's made in the process of it all will even matter.]
There are people who look to me for leadership back home, whose lives are in my hands. Even here, so far away from them, I still have a responsibility to them. I cannot afford not to take this potential threat to their safety seriously.
[Somewhat detracting from his little speech, Nie Huaisang wipes the icing from his mouth with his sleeve.]
Not cooperating and doing my best, whatever that means to Aurora or those above her, is the same as condemning them to death, is it not?
[Most them will die anyway, if they continue the cultivation path they're on but Nie Huaisang's not so arrogant to think he has a right to help them along by doing nothing here.]
no subject
It makes it easier for some to discount the importance of cooperation. So far, what she's hearing here inclines her towards a firm belief this human isn't making that error in judgement. )
I'm inclined to say it is, yes.
( At the same time, is falling in line a guarantee that such as their worlds will be saved? They don't. Rebelling without firm knowledge is, however, the worse plan to begin with.
She really would like a break from god-like beings tugging at the strings of everything she cares about. Ellana rubs her thumb over the pads of her other fingertips, dusting whatever crumbs might linger off to her side. )
I don't know how true or immediate anything here is. Blind belief doesn't seem wise, but blind disbelief is outright dangerous. I'd rather take Aurora at her word about the importance of these trials than learn ignoring as much has condemned everyone and everything I've ever fought for.
( Simple, seen from that standpoint. Cooperation has greater gains than not, given the stakes currently known. At least one other person here agrees. That matters.
Her smile, lopsided as it is, pairs with a nod of her head as she regards the human. )
Ellana Lavellan. I'm erring on the side of cooperation myself. Including with each other, since if it comes down to a matter of ruthlessness, I'm not sure any of us can be more ruthless than the forces that aligned to bring us here.
( Not strictly Aurora, or whatever moves behind her, but the scarcity of resources implied that means whole worlds required elimination. That's a calculation. A judgement. After all, anyone being there at all meant some of it was preventable. Hardly random, at that. )
no subject
[He offers a faint smile of his own. Ellana's words make it clear that she understands the level of cold calculation required to make decisions of this magnitude. Between them and her appearance, it's enough to pique his curiosity. She seems to viewing all of this with a level of rationality and pragmatism that Nie Huaisang tends not to come across in most people.]
It takes a ruthless individual to deem an entire world, its people, and all living creatures that dwell within it as unworthy of existence. All its achievements, its history.... Simply gone as if it never was. It takes a degree of coldness to decide such a thing that I'm unsure I would ever be capable of.
[Nie Huaisang likes to think that he's incapable of making decisions that heartless and cruel, even to save his own sect from extinction but he hopes to never be put in a position that puts that resolve to the test. Even he's surprised himself at some of the extremes he's been willing to go to out of filial loyalty and revenge.]
It would be a terrible thing, I fear, if the number of the representatives of the worlds being tested exceeds the amount of worlds that can be saved. But until we know more, I believe it best to cooperate with one another, especially those new to this situation. I have not left this building yet so I do not even know how many others are even here yet. Or if any of them are of a cooperative mindset.
[He pauses a moment, brushing crumbs off his robes. Clearly, he's had quite few cookies. Stress eating, perhaps?]
I don't even know what the world outside looks like.
no subject
( Rarely her name outside of her clan. Often by her clan name, as if she had no other. Formerly, Inquisitor. Herald still at times, though she wishes that would simply lay itself to rest. Inquisitor was at least honest. Herald was always propaganda to explain an impossibility tied up in the Andrastian faith, especially as sold to her.
She shifts to her feet as he brushes crumbs from his robes, nodding toward the nearby doors. )
Sounds like at least one problem with a straightforward solution. Shall we?
( She allows her staff to slide from her shoulder, where it'd been resting still as she stood, to her hand. For all intents and purposes it looks like a walking staff, and is meant to, so she puts it to that purpose.
She doesn't disagree with what he's said, more to any point, she doesn't think any of the people here can disagree. Or, set in a situation of knowledge that their actions definitively saved their world and condemned another, wouldn't save their own. No one wins: fighting for what one knew made more sense than for another unknown world alone to survive.
Yet that's not this moment, where there's a sky outside and a... street. Paved in an unfamiliar manner, with looming buildings nearby, structures much higher than those she knows back home. Idly, she wonders if Dorian would say these are more akin to what is found in Minrathous.
A number of the structures are fairly unanimous in design from what she can see at a glance, with a different design to an attached building, still about the same height. There's no immediate indication of a preference for a place to go, no persons immediately walking by. Ellana shakes her head, resisting an urge to massage the back of her neck. )
A city, unlike any I've seen before. Preference for a direction? I feel the answer to "what's here" is going to be solved by walking towards anywhere.
no subject
I've never seen buildings made of materials like this or built quite so tall before. Does that look like glass or metal to you?
[His eyes are locked on one of the skyscrapers in the distance, trying to fathom how anyone could find such a blocky structure to be appealing architecture but he keeps that rather inane thought to himself. There's more important things to focus on right now like where to go from here.
He looks up and down the street both ways.]
There doesn't seem to be many people about. Is there even anyone else here, I wonder?
[The feeling has an empty feeling to it and it sounds very quiet to him, nothing at all like the hustle and bustle of the cities he knows back home but one direction seems to lead to an area that looks a little more.... natural? Perhaps? On the other hand, the other direction seems to look just as strange as the building they just left.]
How adventurous are you feeling? It looks as if there may be a little countryside that way -
[He pauses to point offin one direction, toward what may be countryside before pointing in opposite direction toward another rather large building, not too dissimilar from the hospital.]
- or more buildings like the infirmary over there. I'll accompany you in either direction. I'm not sure how I feel about travelling in this place alone yet.
[There's safety in numbers and Nie Huaisang would rather not be killed before he can get a better read on the situation they're in.]
no subject
Personally, I'd prefer the countryside, but my guess is we'd have greater luck trying towards the buildings that way.
( And about as much luck dodging, should things get dodgy. Running up against creatures they knew nothing about out closer to the countryside seemed more possible, and her grasp of what they're actually contending with in this region is too loose to pretend particular confidence to herself.
Heading toward similar looking buildings it is, then. She sets off, matching pace to whatever Huaisang decides. )
It occurs to me we've been blessed by the ability to understand each other without complication, which is —
( About to say unusual, she's interrupted as they come around the corner of the nearest building by an upbeat voice asking: )
Hello! How can I help you?
( Enter: bright orange lanky companion bot #74, right in front of them. Smiling on its screen face, and waving its blocky hand. )
no subject
He's going to need a moment to process what he's even looking at here.]
What the...
[He trails off, at a loss for words as he just gawks at the helper bot. It doesn't seem to be hostile, judging from its cheery words and the blocky hand it's waving in a surprisingly friendly gesture. Unsure of what the etiquette for this situation is, Nie Huasiang lifts his hand hesitantly to awkwardly wave back.]
H-Hello? A-Are you one of the natives of this land? A servant of Lady Aurora, perhaps?
[His guess is that it's animated servant of some kind. The idea that it could be biological doesn't even occur to him but with how weird everything else in this place is, that wouldn't even surprise him. He leans over to whisper in Ellana's ear.]
I don't suppose you have any idea what that is either...?
no subject
( She tilts her head further, watching it watch them. Waiting. Doing... nothing. Politely in attendance? )
Metal golem? I'd say something possessed or imbued with a spirit or demon but it doesn't really seem like that's how things work here.
( The metal golem continues to wait, then repeats itself: Is there anything it can help them with? )
Where everyone is?
( It considers the question, them very chipperly informs them both: )
In their places of residence! Safely within the bubble of the city!
( Aside, to Huaisang: )
Not as helpful as it sounds.
no subject
Places of residence? Can you guide us to them? These buildings are strange to our eyes. We don't know what your residences look like.
[At least, he thinks it's safe to assume that's the case for Ellana, too, judging from her responses so far. An inquiry about where to find other necessities might worth making as well. They'll need food, clothing, medicine, and various other supplies to get by here, he thinks, especially if they have no luck finding anyone.
Then to Ellana:]
It doesn't seem to bear us ill intent but it might be wise to remain on guard, just in case.
