TDM 006

⏵ arrival ⏴

Arrival is absolutely not normal this month. Instead of a hospital bed, you wake in a tunnel with a large group of other people. These are the residents. A woman’s voice in an earpiece hurriedly clues you in with an apology.

I apologize; I had not planned to introduce you this way, but we are low on time. Please proceed down the hallway.

An image of a shattered pearl pops up on your personal HUD and rotates.

I am Aurora. You are joining many others on Etraya in order to save your world from destruction by completing missions. Your current mission is to find the pieces of this object that have become scattered in the library ahead of you.

For everyone else, coming in is much the same. The instruction goes out to head to designated areas immediately, where companion bots will escort the residents of Etraya down into the depths, the area beneath where much the same is explained.

⏵ disrobing ⏴

The tunnel eventually opens directly into the foreroom of an expansive library, painted in marvelous hues and patterns with skylights far above. There are wizards milling about, bearded and holding tomes, quietly chatting amongst themselves.

The reception area of the library has tall ceilings with equally tall doors Before you get too caught up in the scenery, a voice directs you forward. A gentleman, hunched and bespeckled craws out.

"Make a line! Make a line, everyone! You cannot enter the library dressed as you are... Come forward and give me your name."

The receptionist asks your given name and then hands over a box from underneath his counter. You can give him any name you want, he doesn’t seem to mind. It is tied with a tagged ribbon- labeling it accordingly. “The _____ robe of _______.”

(First Letter of Given Name) (Last Letter of Given Name)
A Controlling N Helpful A Melodies N Light
B Glimmering O Floating B Discretion O Mind-Reading
C Wet P Handsome C Growth P Climbing
D Gruesome Q Gullible D Grasping Q Jumping
E Observant R Ratty E Flying R Hurting
F Powerful S Adhesive F Reading S Guiding
G Psychedelic T Sweltering G Dancing T Bug-Speaking
H Swift U Cheerful H Shouting U Exploding
I Voracious V Anxious I Extracting V Complaining
J Soft W Likeable J Punishing W Dividing
K Keen X Ruthless K Creeping X Slapping
L Fabulous Y Dramatic L Walking Y Charming
M Fair Z Demonic M Listening Z Combustion

As you read what the contents of the box may be, they form inside- Looking and behaving as your character expects them to. After all, magic is all in the wielder’s mind.

Don your robes and enter the library.

⏵ unfamiliar familiars ⏴

For those without a familiar (like one hatched from an egg not too long ago) you may borrow one from the library counter. They all have strengths and weaknesses, but they will all assist in the very important mission. As you roam the library, they will make little indications that you are closer or further from finding a piece of the pearl.

Image Image Image
Pro • Hardworking
• Gives correct directions 75% of time
• Won’t run away from you
• Very affectionate
• Gives correct directions only when paired with another rat, toad, or personal pet.
• Gives correct directions 90% of the time
Con • Must feed bookworms • Will run away if too close to a cat • Does not care for you
• Sleepy
• Will run ahead
• Gets distracted by rats

⏵ the task at hand ⏴

With robes donned and creature in hand, you must now complete your mission. Find the pieces of the shattered pearl. As you enter the library, you may notice that it’s all very dim. There’s oil lamps around the place that may be moved with you to assist in your journey if your robes do not already emit light.

Break off and search the library. There is a directory at the front to point guests to all the different sections.

Wings of the Library
A General Works B Music
C Philosophy, Religion D Fine Arts
E History, Auxiliary Sciences F Language and Literature
G Magic, General H Science
J Geography, Anthopology K Medicine
M Agriculture N Hobbies, Recreation
P Social Science Q Military
R Political Science S Practical Arts
T Law W People
X Education Y Spiders

Each section looks enough like the last, though the books within have immense power. Pick up the wrong book, and you might conjure a dragon or a historical figure! You must persist and avoid making too much noise or breaking too many things.

Or else the Librarian, a tall mass of knotted fabric will confiscate your robe and usher you back outside. Your name will be struck from the list, and you must pick a new one to re-enter the library to continue the search.

You can try to fight back against him- he may be set alight with the lamp. But should you be starting fires in here?

⏵ NOTES ⏴

Any thread with 15 comments between you and another may be submitted to find a piece of the pearl. There are 20 pieces altogether, and we will determine if the mission was successful by March 28th. A post will go live on the OOC comm for this!

This mission occurs out of time, similar to how the spaceship had. Meaning, those currently in game can experience these events any time between now, and March 14th.

Please direct all questions to our mod queries comment!

[ He doesn't think she's lying, but is the Archive just supposed to believe this stranger she ran into? Is she so trusting? ]

What makes you believe that she is not lying?
levelshift: (clarify)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-26 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
There's no reason for her to be. When I first met her she was pretty limited in the conversations she'd have with us, so I doubt she was programmed to be able to lie. [He waves a hand.] Besides, it's a hell of a lot easier to just not tell her stuff than it is to program an advanced AI the ability to be dishonest. Why go the extra mile when it's unnecessary?
constants: (i'm not dead but close call)

[personal profile] constants 2025-01-26 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
You are suggesting that instead of programming Aurora to lie that Echo instead lies to her, or at least withholds the precise truth. Being able to tell the truth as one knows it does not necessarily make it the truth.

[ It certainly makes sense, not to bother making Aurora capable of lying. Why add a scenario that could go wrong? What if Aurora was able to go against her programming in a way that allowed her to tell the unintended truth? No, much more efficient simply to hide such a thing from her. ]
levelshift: (working late)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-26 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Right, that's one option. Echo's telling the truth, or Echo's lying or withholding information from Aurora.

[She's quick to catch on, though there's additional information. He doesn't see the point in keeping it from her, even if she's new she'll likely find out eventually, given that he made it public on the network a while back.]

There's another option. Apparently, every time Echo brings someone here they lose part of themselves. If you count Aurora's sister's city then Echo's brought in a lot of people, so who knows how much of them is still left. Them missing pieces of themselves might in turn affect what Aurora knows.

[personal profile] constants 2025-01-26 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh now that is curious. Why would Echo do such a thing? ]

Why bring people here if it means a slow death? Is Echo not necessary to govern the multiverse? Why invite personal destruction? Who will judge us and return us to our worlds if Echo is completely lost?

I don't have answers to any of your questions. That's how in the dark we are here.

[Welcome to Etraya, where it's the blind leading the blind.]

[personal profile] constants 2025-01-26 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
[ Inconvenient, but perhaps she should not expect some random boy she just met to hand her all the answers on a silver platter. ]

Are those questions Aurora could answer?
levelshift: (look over)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-26 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Doubt it. You can try talking to her if you want, though. She's open to speaking with all of us.

[She's friendly! She's a friendly AI.]
constants: (it's a post jail date)

[personal profile] constants 2025-01-28 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I shall do so at a later time. Are there any formalities to observe when talking with Aurora?

[ She herself has formal communications back and forth where people ask her to be an arbitrator in various matters. It would only make sense for Aurora to have the same, positioned as she is. ]
levelshift: (look over)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-28 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. Just don't be an asshole and you'll be fine.

[Which... given how their conversation has gone so far, he seriously doubts will be an issue.]

It is not the way of the Archive to conduct ourselves in such a manner, but I will take your advice to heart. Thank you for being willing to answer my questions, Accelerator.

[ And she is thankful. He's helped her a lot, not only by rescuing her from her robe but sharing so much information with her. The Archive is only too aware of how valuable information is. ]
levelshift: (clarify)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-29 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
[He waves a hand dismissively.]

It's not a big deal. This is shit you'd pick up on on your own eventually.
constants: (the Wrath of the Froyo)

[personal profile] constants 2025-01-29 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ The Archive can tell when someone is being humble and passing off thanks. She has no reason to push the matter. ]

Now that I am grounded and more educated, would you be amenable to searching for one of these shards with me?
levelshift: (what a pain)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-29 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
... Yeah, fine. I got nothing better to do.

[And it might be a good idea to keep an eye on her for a bit longer, to make sure her robes don't start acting up again.]
constants: (this is the santa claus of hangovers)

[personal profile] constants 2025-01-29 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
[ Not enthusiastic consent, but consent all the same. She'll make do with that. If she was being cautious she might ask what better he could be doing given that this is their mission, but there's no need to be so exacting. If she has to guess it's rather a turn of phrase. ]

Thank you. I believe that we are supposed to use these animals to find these shards? Do you have any experience with this?
levelshift: <user name=patch-robots site=livejournal.com> (shrug)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-29 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No, this library is new and none of the missions have involved using animals to find something.

[He glances over at his owlet, who just gives a slow blink.]

You'd think a dog would be better. [They're known for hunting and tracking, after all. He sighs.] Let's start walking and see if anything happens.
constants: (quit ruining dick picture day)

[personal profile] constants 2025-01-30 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Wizards have many ideas of what constitutes a proper familiar. While I know a wizard with a dog, I do not believe they are commonly popular, at least in media.

[ The Archive bends down to pick her rat up and holds it up in front of her face. ]

Please help us find the shard.

[ She sets it back on the ground again where it looks between the Archive, Accelerator, and the owlet a few times, and then scampers off down the aisle. ]

Let us follow and see if it leads anywhere.
levelshift: (sus)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-30 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
[Accelerator sighs a little.]

They aren't practical people, huh.

[Wizards are basically magicians, right, and magicians are nuts.

He watches her ask the rat politely for help, and squints suspiciously as the animal runs off. Slowly, he starts to follow it.]

Did that thing understand you?
constants: (it's a post jail date)

[personal profile] constants 2025-01-30 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have no way of knowing, but there is no harm in asking politely. However, given there is magic within this place and they were assigned to us for a purpose, I do not think it unreasonable to expect it does.

[ She follows the rat down long hallways of bookshelves, passing them by. ]
levelshift: (sigh 2)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-31 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I guess that tracks.

[Maybe it's a magic rat, or the library has some magic field that translates for animals. He glances at the owlet, who has her gaze on the rat, and lets out a little hoot.]

It'd be pretty stupid to encourage us to use animals if they don't help.
constants: (i wish i was a coyote)

[personal profile] constants 2025-02-04 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
If we are being set up for success, I would agree. There is always a chance we misunderstand their meaning, or we are being mislead, but I would hope the situation is not so antagonistic.

[ The rat leads them to a shelf and stops, looking up at them now that it's reached its destination. The Archive scans the vast selection of books in front of them. ]

We seem to have reached a destination, though the specifics are lost on me. Do you have any ideas apart from checking books one by one?
levelshift: (neck crack)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-02-04 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That'd be a pain.

[Once they reach the shelves he stops, looking around. This part of the library doesn't look all that notable, so with a frown he glances at the owlet. It feels so weird talking to an animal, but....]

Well?

[She fluffs what few feathers she has, flapping her wings. Unfortunately, she isn't quite big enough to actually fly, so Accelerator carefully scoops her off his shoulder and holds her out towards the books. Right away she starts leaning towards one larger one on the shelf. He glances back at the Archive, raising an eyebrow.]

There's either food or a pearl shard in there. [Hopefully.]
constants: (washing down sadness with vodka)

[personal profile] constants 2025-02-05 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ Clearly the animals do have some tendency towards certain books. Whether they are correct or not is about to be known.

The Archive reaches for the book and pulls it out. She's about to open it when something glimmering catches her eye in the gap in the shelf, something sparkling in the magic lights still floating around her. She reaches in and pulls it out, holding it up for Accelerator to see. A broken shard of a thing. ]

Is this it, then?
levelshift: (tell me absolutely everything)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-02-06 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
[Accelerator is just glad it isn't a dead mouse or something. He leans in, examining the shard. Seems like a piece of a pearl to him!]

Looks like it is. Let's take it back to Aurora.
constants: (this is the santa claus of hangovers)

[personal profile] constants 2025-02-06 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ She replaces the book and closes her hand around the shard, holding on tight. She's not about to lose it now that they worked so hard to find it! With her other hand she bends down and scoops her rat up, holding it gently. She's not about to leave it behind. ]

I will follow you.
